It’s the ‘Olympic Games’ of the Fashion Industry and this year's Met Gala red carpet certainly brought the fashion drama!
For those of you who don’t know, the Met Gala ball is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, which is held in the fashion capital of New York City.
Attended by movie stars, supermodels, designers and the ‘who’s who’ of the fashion scene, the Met Gala Ball is the one event of year where general ‘red carpet fashion rules’ DON’T apply and the guests dress to impress in accordance with a ‘theme’. Bigger is always better. Flesh is there to be flashed. Trains are ridiculously long and sequin turbans get you on the Best Dressed list.
This year’s chosen theme was Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology and, from what I can see so far, sequins, bling and OTT jewellery made for the perfect setting.
To celebrate the many Met Gala moments that have shaped fashion history, I have rounded up my Top 5 Met Gala moments over the years (for those who require a ‘crash course’ in #metmoments).
I have also hand picked my favourite lewks from this year’s event with a break down on each ensemble to ensure you are across the hottest and most up-and-coming Black Tie trends for 2016.
2016 Met Gala Break Down.
Poppy Delevingne in Marchesa.
The British socialite ruled the red carpet in her silvery Marchesa creation where a fashionable fusion of beading, sequins, plunging neckline and statement jewels made for the perfect tech x fashion moment. I love that she went for the ‘more is more’ philosophy and pulled it off with the aid of sleek hair and a burgundy lip.
Blake Lively in Burberry.
Now I hear Blake doesn’t use a stylist and, if true, this girl is truly talented! Blake and I have VERY different tastes when it comes to fashion (she tends to be girly whereas I favour androgynous looks) yet her red carpet outfits always stand out to me. Her ‘matchy matchy’ tendencies just work and her knack for unique colour combinations always win me over. Please note that Red and Blush is an ABSOLUTE match made in fashion heaven.
Sienna Miller in Gucci.
Arguably THE coolest label on the market donned by arguably THE coolest girl in the industry. Sienna Miller oozed her usual bohemian best in this glittering creation, which was perfectly complimented by a simple clutch and earrings. Sienna has mastered the art of restraint and always manages to make even the most elaborate of couture gowns her 'own'.
Lupita Nyong’o in Calvin Klein.
No one, I repeat no one, does colour quite like Lupita. Her bold fashion choices often land her in questionable fashion categories but her gilded gowns and colourful couture choices always position her at the top of my list. This stunning CK creation is only further enhanced by her incredible confidence and over-the-top do’.
I love when a gal takes risks both in fashion AND in beauty and Ciara hit it out of the park with this barely there ensemble. The sequin crosses, the sheer underlay, the bare back and the silver hair was perfectly accompanied by simple make up and minimal accessories. Ladies and gentleman, this is how it’s done!
